Lessons are intentionally designed to enhance participant understanding of the material being presented. Lesson plans are designed for 30–minute sessions. However, the length of time spent on activities and discussion can vary, depending on the facilitator’s judgment, based upon the intensity of the question-focused discussion.

Russell K. Tippett, Cindy S. Tippett, and David C. Couch, are cofounders of the Academy for Leadership Abilities® (ALA) Organization. Russ and Cindy, are the creators of the highly acclaimed P.O.W.E.R. Curriculum®, ALA Educational Programs. In 1988, they were members of an elite Develop A Curriculum (DACUM) process team of 20 Master Teacher Professionals who identified knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes routinely exhibited by highly experienced practitioners in 15 separate career fields.
The lessons learned from that two-year endeavor were applied as they developed ALA Leadership Skills and Personal Growth Strategies Library for the Academy for Leadership Abilities® Organization.
Their over-arching goal was three-fold:
- Develop practical hands-on programming that would help participants of any age or academic achievement level understand how highly effective ethical caring leaders think and act.
- Develop easy to understand and easy to use facilitator development manuals for use by any ethical individual possessing reasonable common-sense, regardless of whether being formally trained and certified as a public school teacher.
- Develop easy to understand and easy to use accompanying workbooks that in combination with in-class guided facilitation and small group interaction help participants to develop:
- Self-awareness: the ability to accurately recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts, values and how they influence behavior. The ability to accurately assess one’s strengths and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.”
- Self-management: the ability to successfully regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations— effectively managing stress, controlling impulses, and motivating oneself. The ability to set and work towards personal and academic goals.
- Social-awareness: the ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The ability to understand social and ethical norms for behavior and to recognize family, school, and community resources and supports.
- Relationship skills: the ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups.

Practical Strategies ltd® co-founders, Russ Tippett and Cindy Baden Tippett truly believe that we have been placed on this earth for the specific purpose of creating Leadership Skills and Personal Growth Strategies educational programming.
